Shell asked:

My future mother in law says that I should put China on my registry. Well I read in a magazine that alot of people now a days are not using china, they are just getting nice white dishes and everything and dressing it up with flowers. China would be nice, I would rather get other things besides that. What do you think?

  1. Look at the location that you’re registering. We didn’t register for china b/c they didn’t have any that we liked.

  2. We are registering for “Everyday China”. It’s not nearly expensive as fine china but it is made out of porclein and some are made with bone ash in them. These seem to be cheaper but just as nice. We are choosing a simple white set that has swirls in it. Then we are getting dessert/salad plates and different style mugs to “spice” it up. I am a huge dinner party person so I want pieces that I can make formal or informal. Go on what YOU need. If you can live without fancy china and would enjoy something else then get what you would rather have. People would rather get you something that you will love then something that will be stored and used once or twice a year.

  3. If you’d rather not have china, don’t register for china. Your FMIL may want to give you china, and she can. But my FMIL says that she NEVER uses her wedding china. My FH gave her the impression that I wanted china, when he was the one who suggested it. He chose settings from a restaurant that he liked, at $300 a place setting. No. Way.
You can get lovely dishes, from Italy at a much lower price, at discount department stores like TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, or HomeGoods(these are all owned by the same company, so if you find a setting that you prefer, and all of the pieces aren’t available at one store, you can put them on layaway for a minimal deposit and go find the rest at another store before you commit to the full purchase). Register for gift cards at these stores, and shop for china or whatever at your leisure.

  4. I’ve never been served on china, and I would never use it. Therefore, I did not register for it.

I agree with your idea of “dressing up” plain dishes with flowers.

  5. You really need to think of just how many times you would use that China, My sisters hasn’t been used in 6 years, she uses her nice Square shaped dishes she really wanted. Frankly speaking, China is an heirloom set. You could always add it, but most people don’t buy it for you, because the patterns are such a personal thing.

  6. Pick a china pattern; you can choose one that is all white or a cream color. I’ve found that eventually you’ll become interested in having china and crystal but you’ll probably find you can’t fit the expense into you daily budget; let your friends and family buy it for you. However, you should also register for other items as they’ll be less expensive than china. We recently gave a gravy boat to my husband’s cousin and it was just under $100!

  7. You may not think you will need it, but honestly I know it’s hard but you need to look into the future a bit – say, seven or ten years. It will be wonderful to have a set of china. Doesn’t have to be fancy dancy stuff – but just different than your everyday dishes. It’s called casual china.
It’s a very traditional gift for guests to get – a place setting, or a completer set, etc.
Just look around and choose something simple enough to be classic, which will stand over time.=*&Keyword=china&resultsPerPage=24&Action=searchdrilldown&attrs=Department%3ADepartment%3AFine+China|Brand:Brand:Mikasa
