In its most recent annual survey of 70 countries, Privacy International ranks the United States — along with China, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United Kingdom — among the worst performers in terms of protecting the privacy of its citizens. These eight nations qualify as “endemic surveillance societies,” in which privacy-invasive laws, policies, and regulations are pervasive and systemic. According to the report, “concern over immigration and border control dominated the world agenda in 2007,” and the 2007 rankings “indicate an overall worsening of privacy protection across the world.”

  3. Well, you also realize things like red light cameras, cameras in ATMs, security cameras in stores etc contribute to this number. If you were mugged, what do you want to bet you’re happy to have those cameras?

  4. If you don’t like being safe you can always move to a country that allows for lack of safety. Do it soon or you may have to show an I.D. card sometime. GET A LIFE

  6. Orwell may have been thirty years off but he was dead on right. Red light cameras, face recognition technology, home alarm monitors, on-star for your car , street surveillance cameras, ankle bracelet’s for home confinement, scatter x-ray’s at the airport, on and on.
1984 IS here. Almost… Kind of scary.

  8. NSA Agent 3176 is now back-tracing your screen name !

Your Statement / Question doesn’t surprise me at all though.
If you would look at Privacy International’s survey from 1999 or 2000, I’d bet we aren’t on there.

The Patriot Act, combined with the illegal actions of the Bushie’s and the Phone companies, are the biggest threats to our privacy since the “Commie-under-every-bed” days of McCarthyism.

I agree with whoever said, “If you are willing to trade your privacy for security,…you will have neither” .

  9. Privacy International? What the hell is Privacy International?
Every loonie left wing group group starts a something -or-other International movement and creates reports which
    ” Prove” its agenda.
How does Immigration suddenly become a Privacy concern?
Why do naive people with puerile minds and complete innocence of world affairs always give voice to these loonie Left wing, anti-American jerks?
If 1984 is here now it is only in the view of some leftist idealogues who can equate, in their own sick minds, the freedoms in the United States with the Repression in China and Russia.
Anyone who does that is sick and incredibly shallow.

  10. Anyone who believes that is the kind of person who makes us all snort our drinks out our noses when they report that “educated voters” are “going Democrat” this year.

Surveys like that are done with an AGENDA. They define the terms in such a way as to prove the point they want to make. There are survey firms that can “prove” that your mother is either a total whore or Mother Teresa. Take your pick.
The worst thing is that ignorant people believe them. You did.
