veg_hel asked:

When are the official dates for New Year? I have some decorations I would like to put up, when can I do this? How do I say Happy New Year in Chinese (I would like to surprise my Chinese sister-in-law), and when should I say it? Is now too soon, as I am seeing her tonight. I have a card for her, but is it too soon to give it to her? Shall I take some sweets to her as well?

  1. happy new year in chinese would be gong hay fat choy. For the card, it would be best to give it to her tonight or you might forget.. Anyways those are your decisions and you could decide if you want to give her sweets.

  2. Chinese New Year is on the 7th.

There are two ways to say “Happy new Year”. In Cantonese, it’s something like “Guong hay fat tsoy”. In Mandarin, it’s “Gong hay fa tsai”.

It’s never too soon to give the new year’s card and sweets are always welcome. Maybe even some red envelopes?

Well, chocolates would be fine, but in the chinese tradition, people are given little red packages with money. It symbolizes good luck.
