  1. The engine is not made in China. Only the V6 in the Chevrolet Equinox and the Pontiac Torrent are made in China.

The HHR is assembled in Mexico. The 2.2L four-cylinder engine is assembled in Tonawanda, New York. The 2.4L four-cylinder engine is assembled in Spring Hill, Tennessee. You can verify this by looking at the window sticker at the dealer – it will tell you where the engine and transmission were made.

The manual transmission is made in Italy by Getrag, a German company.

The automatic transmission is made in Canada.

In summary, if your father-in-law buys an HHR with an automatic transmission, the car is assembled in Mexico, the engine is made in USA, and the transmission is made in Canada.
