What should I do with my passport in China?

I’m an American visiting Beijing and Hong Kong in a few weeks. Are there any Chinese laws that say I have to carry my passport with me at all times for identification? Or can I just leave it in my hotel? Is it safe to leave it in my hotel room? We are not staying in a western-style hotel. Thanks!

  3. By law, you should be able to identify yourself. Than can be your passport, or a photo ID, driving license etc.

If you really worry, leave your passport in the hotel and take a photocopy of it. Policy in HK is unlikely to charge a tourist.

  4. Make a copy of the picture page. If you have a safe in your hotel room, leave the passport there, and carry the picture page with you. If you don’t have a safe, keep your passport with you, but leave the copy with your stuff at your hotel. If you lose your passport (which is more likely to happen if you’re carrying it around with you everywhere), then having that copy will make things go much more smoothly when you need to get a new passport at the embassy.
