I think it is necessary because in China there is limited living space, and if they had more than one child per couple it would become over populated, and the living conditions would worsen.

i don’t think the law itself is immoral, but it causes people to do immoral things. if a population would willingly adhere to such a law it would quickly solve any overpopulation problems, unfortunately people enjoy making babies so uncountable kids are abandoned or killed by their parents, and i’m not talking about a professionally performed abortion, i mean parents will kill their child after it’s born if it’s a girl because they want a boy. this is also why you see so many chinese girls adopted by families in other countries.

The Chinese had an over population problem. They felt this was the best way to stop their problem.

This is necessary solution to chinese over crowd population accoring to the thoery of T.R.Malthus, you knew that there is 1.3 BILLION pepole around here.

i agree with the idea behind it but not the law itself. i think a different law that would have the same effect would be to force people to be responsible for their kids. crack down on parents that abandon their kids and force parents to work as many hours as necessary to make enough money to support their kids.

Its OK for China because there are a hell lot of people over there. If population is to be controlled, this is the last resort.

They have that law but most couples keep hiving kids till they have a boy giving any girl up for adoption.

i think its wrong in some ways, b/c the children that they cant have are just thrown out into the streets w/o anything. as for the law, i think it allows a couple to have only one daughter if its their first child, then try for a son, but until they get one, they have to disown their others. also, if their first child is a son, then thats when they cant have anymore children. & i dont think it really solves population problems, b/c the couples are always trying for a son while theyre creating even more daughters.

I understand the logic behind it, but it is wrong to control how many children a couple can have. I can imagine it shatters many couple’s dreams and some kids may feel lonely as an only child.
But the worse thing is that some people kill their kids! Especially if it’s a girl (because they feel a son is more valuable). How sad.

It is a good law, it helps curtail the population. But it is not absolute – which is to say that people can have more than one child but they have to face the concequences. which would be heigher school fees, inability to hold any government job – either by the parents or the children, and most of all in some parts of the country they will loose face! And technically it is not a 1 child law!!!! If a woman bears a first born as a girl she would then have the liberty to the right of a second child, after the second child – irrelative of its sex – she can no longer give birth to another child (except in the event that any of her children die)

Note that the one child policy has been ammended recently so that now, supposing that both mother and father are only-children themselves, they will be allowed to have two children (to replace them).
The one-child policy is also different for minority groups within China, many of whom live in rural areas.
