  1. “extra-territoriality” was a feature of the treaties forced upon China during the conflicts of the 1840s. The treaties provided for treaty ports where Western powers could conduct trade, and by extension the treaties were interpreted to allow foreign settlements where activities were beyond the reach of Chinese law and authorities.
