My sister in law said there was a ban on this and I don’t believe that.

  1. -There is no ban, it just is taking 5 years for a non special needs baby. (Less than a year for special needs). China also implemented “new” requirements last year. But you can still adopt from there.

  2. Yes there have been changes, but no there is not a ban on adopting from China. China is still accepting dossiers and has made it clear that while the wait times have increased to 3+ years, international adoption is till need in the near future.

Just a few of the changes: No singles. Must be married 2 years. Age limit of 50. Max BMI of 40. $85,000 (U.S) in assets. Cannot have a history of mental illness or serious health concerns (cancer).

The changes came into affect in May 2007. You should contact an agency that handles adoptions from China to make sure that you qualify.

  3. The Chinese are trying to keep children in China. (I know this from friends who have applied for adopting a second child from China.) If they can they should go to Chinese families.

But it does limit international adoptions. My friends will get a better preference because their daughter is Chinese origin.

I was told about 10 years for Aust in most cases for the wait. The US do get in first…(Widely know apparently, the have more money. I have nothing against Americans so don’t get me wrong about saying that. Might be just a silly rumour. but they knew once placements happened for US couples they would be next…)
